86' hardbody not getting charge.....

Have an 86' Nissan hardbody with the Z24 motor. I have installed a new alternator, inspected all wire connections and wires and still my engine is not getting a charge. The voltage regulator is supposively internally mounted in the alternator itself yet my local parts carrier lists an external regulator for the same year. If mine is externally mounted I haven't seemed to have found it yet... Anyways, trying to stay away from shop due to money issues therefore I am seeking help from you fine people!!! Any help is appreciated! Thanks!!
