Re: questions with regards to slectract 4wd [ QUOTE ]
ok just to clarify. I own a 2001 grand cherokee.
part time selcted means all 4 wheels are locked
full time means one wheen in the back and one in the front are locked. Is this correct?

No, if your Jeep has Select Trac, which means it has the NV-242 transfercase, you have 2wd, 4wd full time high, 4wd part time high, neutral and 4wd part time low. The transfercase doesn't control the axles at all.
The main difference between "full time" and "part time" is in the transfercase there is a differential similar in use to the differentials in the front and rear axles. 4wd full time the transfercase differential is unlocked and the front and rear driveshafts can spin at different speeds, relieving any bind that might build up in the driveline when the 4wd is engaged on very high traction surfaces, like dry pavement. 4wd full time is also the best mode to drive on highways during slippery weather conditions (rain, snow, sleet, etc.); 4wd part time high is good for driving in off pavement conditions. Low gives you an extra low gear to have better control or to get heavy loads started off road. The low gear ratio for your transfercase is 2.72:1.
The select Trac transfercase doesn't lock or unlock the axle differentials, so your tires may still slip if they lose tracton. |
