| | Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining Well theres two sounds coming from my trans. that i NEED to address.
the first, a squeal similar to a fan belt slipping, occurs when I'm letting the clutch out. Mainly happens in first from a stop, but i have heard it in 4th as well while cruising. It seems to be fine if i really gas it and let the clutch out fast. It is NOT the T.O. Bearing as i just changed it. (had trans dropped for dual t-case)
Heres the kicker, it all started with a Marlin 1600lb ceramic clutch. Any ideas?
the second sound is terrible.. tho its hard to explain (can't drag my computer into the truck and record it ha ha) symptoms:
-occurs anytime I'm not on throttle.
-clutch in/out, in gear/out of gear, doesn't matter
-Not internal to transmission as two transmissions have made the same sound.
-sounds like rocks in a rusty tumbler..
Maybe pilot bearing? or the clutch is fubar (although no slip)..
I know addressing sounds on the net is a blind shot, but maybe it will ring a bell with someone. Also sorry for the lengthy post.
any faint ideas? I don't think they are related, but both sound like they're from the same area. |

| | Re: Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining Well, that sounds like you have maybe a few different problems.
The first sound may be the clutch its self... When you hear it in 4th gear it could be something different you are hearing...
The second while I don't have any ideas, I can rule out some things. With the clutch in nothing in the tranny is turning, but the pilot bearing is.
When you let the clutch out the pilot bearing stops turning, and the tranny input shaft starts, and if it's in gear so do all those things...
So if it's whenever you are not on the throttle with the clutch in or out..... It's not in the tranny/clutch......
Have you checked for loose exhaust or something like that? I'd hate for the "rocks in a rusty tumbler" to be in you engine! |

| | Re: Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining Analyzing sounds on-line is like sniffing flowers through your butt!!
Butt... we'll try..
This sounds like a clutch-pressure plate issue. I'm not a big fan of ceramic clutches, and I believe a special metal alloy flywheel is recommended when installing a cermic clutch disc. Like 2ndgen said a bad pilot bearing will make noise while the clutch is disengaged and the flywheel is spinning. In my experience when a clutch squeals on take off, it's not quite making full contact with the flywheel. My new-old 86 did that and I had to adjust the freeplay, then it stopped. The other noise... well I'll need to think about that more.

| | Re: Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining sounds like a bearing in your tranny. i would hold off driving her until you check it out in much more detail.
I had a similar problem with mine and it turned out to be the countershaft main bearing. And while driving it on the highway it finally gave out basically shreading my gears... NOT FUN... |

| | Re: Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining is there a chance that since the sound isn't present at a stop, the sound is in the axles? just being transfered through the transmission.
If i were to drive in low or low-low gear, get the truck up to 3rd gear and engine brake..with no sound it would have to be axle related right?
The reason im thinking this is new u-joints quieted up the problem for maybe 2 weeks. |

| | Re: Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining Is there any play in the axles or u-joints?
It could be a tranny problem that is just transferring the sound down the drive shaft. Does the shifter wobble? Is there metal in the gear oil? |

| | Re: Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining you bought an AA adaptor for your dual cases, or a very old marlin. the mc05.
the bearing is thin and allows the coupler to vibrate.
sounds like hell huh. I had ordered a marlin about 4 years ago when I built my truck. had a shop put it together for me, about a year later I found that it was the cheaper AA adaptor.
but they would not stand behind it.
oh it is your throw out, you didn't put a finger full of grease on the contact surface of the bearing. |

| | Re: Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining been making the sounds before the dual cases tho. And no i didn't put a finger of grease on there. never heard to, but That would make sense.
U-joints seem ok, but like i said after replacing them the sound was gone for a few weeks.. |

| | Re: Drivetrain (trans/clutch??) whining Does it make the noise when you are siting still? That will eliminate the axles, drive shafts..... |
