EX reverse?

I am looking to get a 400ex and am wondering if it would be worth the money saved by buying a used ex and putting reverse on it? Reverse?, is it possible on a old ex? Is that just another gear that goes the opposite way or how does the 2005 reverse work? Just wondering because there is a 05 ex at my dealer which will be closing in on a year old.
